WordPress and brief information about its History
WordPress was released on May 27th 2003 by Matt Mullenweg as a fork for b2/cafelog. WordPress is an open source CMS, often used as a blog publishing application powered by PHP and MySQL. There are many features involved with it which also includes a plug-in architecture and also a template system. By August 2010; WordPress 3.0 was downloaded 12.5 million times making it an instant hit. It is used in more than 1,000,000 biggest websites of the biggest websites making it the most popular CMS in use.
Actually speaking, b2/cafelog was the harbinger to Wordpress, b2/cafelog was estimated to have been employed on approximately 2,000 blogs as of May 2003. It was written in PHP language so that it could be used with MySQL by Michel Valdrighi, who is now a contributing developer to WordPress. Although WordPress is the official successor, another project called the b2evolution is also in active development. WordPress first appeared in 2003 as an effort to create a fork for b2/cafelog. The name was suggested by Christine Selleck a friend of Mullenweg. Later in 2004 the licensing terms for the competing Movable Type package were changed by Six Apart and many of its users migrated to WordPress, adding to its success and popularity.
After this WordPress also won a couple of awards namely WordPress won a Packt Open Source CMS Award in 2007, and WordPress won the best Open Source CMS Award in the year of 2009. By October, 2009, the 2009 Open Source CMS Market Share Report reached to the conclusion that WordPress enjoys the greatest brand strength among any of the open source content management systems.
In the year 2009 Matt Mullenweg announced that the official WordPress theme directory would not host any themes containing sponsored links. Though it was not received well with designers and sponsored link users, this decision was applauded by WordPress users. The official WordPress theme directory ceased to accept any new themes, including those without sponsored links, shortly after the announcement was made. Later in July 2008, a new theme directory was opened which was styled along the same lines as the plug-ins directory. When any theme was uploaded to it, it was first vetted by an automated program. After this, it was then verified by a human. In December 2008, over 200 themes were removed from the WordPress theme directory as they did not comply with GPL License requirements.
After the release of WordPress 3.0, Matt Mullenweg updated the WordPress community that his team will be taking a release cycle off from the WordPress software to focus on expanding and improving the WordPress community. WordPress with its success, recognition and has proved to be one of the best CMS's in use today. Stats have also proved that WordPress is the most popular CMS in use today.
