World Of Sound: Creating, Recording And Manipulating Audio
The music industry, the film industry, television
, advertising and live concert events: what do they all have in common? They all depend on excellent sound, and excellent sound comes from excellently-trained audio experts. If you've ever dreamed about being at the consoles behind any one of these entertaining industries, consider a career in audio.
It is almost impossible to begin a career in audio without specialized training. Many schools and institutes offer programs that will help turn up the volume on your career prospects. Take the time to research and compare several programs. Some things to consider are the facilities. While having the latest technology is great, you might not always get to work on state-of-the-art equipment right after school. Be sure to get a full education on a wide range of equipment. Another thing is the instructors; a school is only as good as its teachers. Great teachers gain their experience both inside the classroom and out in the real world. Take time to research faculties, you never know if your teacher may have worked with your favourite singer or on your favourite TV show. Finally, making the transition from student to professional isn't always easy, so look for schools with job placement programs. Consider these and other factors when selecting a program.
The world of audio is separated into several branches. Studio recording deals mainly with production and post-production mixing, getting the quality of audio just right. Live recording is exciting because of its real-time connection to concerts, artists and events. Sound design gives you the creative control over making new sounds and effects. All of these fields require intense training, dedication, and a serious commitment to knowing and caring what resonates in our ears and in our minds.
Studio recording graduates can expect to find work in any number of areas where sound is a major player. Aside from recording studios, they can work at concert venues, arenas, clubs, TV and radio stations, film production companies, advertising agencies and music festivals.
Audio engineering schoolwill take you through all the aspects of recording and live sound from analog, digital and even MIDI (musical instrument digital interface) sequencing, recording and mixing. You will have to grasp both the technical side as well as the creative/musical side.
Sound engineering schoolis slightly more creative as this is the field where new sounds are dreamed up in the minds of the engineers, then created through any number of methods. Like recording, the student will become familiar with the different aspects of audio generation, but perhaps with slightly more of an emphasis on manipulating real-world objects and computer-simulated sounds to get that perfect effect. Some other areas where a sound designer may find work are post-production film and TV studios, focusing on special sound effects, as well as multimedia and video game design companies.
The world around us is full of amazing sounds. Some are natural, and can be recorded and manipulated. Some are the products of creative and talented individuals. If you want to help compose the soundtracks of our lives, studying at an audio school will put you on the right track.
