of view of various manufacturers is the possibility of tacking on as many special features and options to devices that, perhaps, have not had their potential fully realised in terms of what they can do and how users can make the most out of them.

Weve had this with phones they used to only be capable of making calls and sending texts, but now they can go on the internet, take photos, play games and make video calls and now were starting to see it with the latest generation of video game consoles like Playstations and Xboxes.

Both consoles have different extras but users are able to download things like extras for the games they already have, such as new stadiums or weapons, exclusive levels and demos of games that are yet to be released, while those with an Xbox can use the Xbox Live system to download music and games. Payment methods can differ though those using the Playstation Network have to register a debit or credit card on their account in order to buy anything, while those on Xbox Live have to deal in Microsoft Points.

These are available from a variety of retailers and come on cards of various denominations with codes that have to be entered into a computer so they are registered on the users account. Everything that can be bought on the Xbox Live Marketplace is classified by the amount of Points they cost for instance, a new weapons set for Call of Duty might cost 2100 Microsoft Points. As well as high street retailers, these Points are also available from many online retailers, who will just email the codes to you once your payment has been processed.

The other main difference between the two systems is the fact that the Playstation Network is free to use, while anyone wanting to play against others using their broadband connection on an Xbox has to pay a subscription fee. Although there is a free service also available, it doesnt include anywhere near the same level of features that the paid Xbox Live 12 month subscription does. Although you might think that this would put off a lot of gamers, it seems that the pull of online gaming is too strong, as the service boasts roughly forty million users around the world.

All of this is without mentioning all of the other things that broadband-enabled games consoles can do, such as streaming content from Sky, 4OD and BBC iPlayer. With the next generation of consoles only a couple of years from release, it seems probable that 3D gaming will feature heavily on them as 3D programming is threatening to do on our televisions. Fans will have to wait to find out other features developers will include on the new versions of the Playstation and Xbox.
