"Rowdy" Roddy Piper was one of the most colorful personalities ever to hit the WWE

. The Hot Rod, as he came to be known, started his career as a villain. Piper gained notoriety with the New World Order in the 1970s, but rose to new heights when he took on the legendary Hulk Hogan in the 1980s. Get WWE tickets and see your favorite wrestler in the ring.

Piper became Hogan's main rival, and the two engaged in some of the most entertaining battles the WWE has ever seen. The two wrestlers had a memorable match at the War to Settle the Score on MTV, which set the stage for a more famous event that was held at the first WrestleMania. Piper joined forces with "Mr. Wonderful" Paul Orndorff and had "Cowboy" Bob Orton in his corner. Hogan teamed up with Mr. T. Although Piper's team lost the fight, the match lived up to the hype and will go down as one of the marquee moments in WWE history.

Piper also hosted an interview segment called Piper's Pitt. During an interview, Hot Rod brutally attacked one of his guests with a coconut. The victim was Jimmy Snuka and Piper rendered the man unconscious. Piper added another highlight to his well-established career at Wrestlemania III, but this time WWE fans approved of his behavior. The 6-foot-2 grappler defeated the late "Adorable" Adrian Adonis at the Pontiac Silverdome.

A couple of weeks before the match, Hot Rod announced it would be his last time in the squared ring. He was able to beat Adonis with a Sleeper Hold and then he shaved the wrestler's head. The record-breaking crowd at the Silverdome erupted as WWE fans gave Hot Rod a standing ovation.

Hot Rod pursued a career in acting, but found out that his heart truly belonged to wrestling. He returned to the ring on Jan. 19, 1992 and defeated the Mountie for the Intercontinental Championship. The victory was Piper's first taste of WWE gold in his long and distinguished career. Piper's title reign did not last long. He took on Bret "Hit Man" Hart in another classic match at WrestleMania VIII.

After the referee was knocked out, Hot Rod wanted to use the ring bell as a weapon, but the crowd steered him in the right direction and he decided to play by the rules. Although Hart won the match, Piper was still a winner in the fan's hearts. In 2006, the wrestler won gold again after he teamed up with Ric Flair. The duo captured the World Tag Team Championship.

After a brief hiatus, Hot Rod came back to wrestling and represented the WWE as interim President. During that year, he fought Goldust in a Hollywood Backlot Brawl at WrestleMania XII. Piper defeated Goldust, and just like WretleMania III, the crowd cheered for Hot Rod. It's very rare that a superstar can be versatile enough to be one of the most-hated wrestlers in the WWE, as well as one of the most beloved. But Piper pulled it off. He recently entered the WWE Hall of Fame.
