You Are Not The Problem When Struggling With Stress
Most of us experience stress from time to time
. Perhaps you are having family or relationship problems at home or too many pressures at work or at school.
Maybe you feel tense, anxious or irritable much of the time. Or you suffer from headaches, backaches, indigestion, insomnia or some other physical problem that is either caused by or aggravated by stress.
I'm going to assume that if you've ever had major stress in your life, you were probably told that the very best way to deal with it was to manage it.
Stress Management Blues
If you're like me, however, or like most of the patients I treated in my medical practice, you've also probably discovered that managing stress can be a losing proposition.
Why? Because, no matter how much you try to relax, how many miles you run, or how many vacations you take, stress just keeps on happening in your life. And simply trying to use stress management techniques to cope with it rarely gives you the type of permanent, long-term relief you're hoping for.
YOU Are NOT the Problem
Well, I've got some very good news for you.If you've been struggling to deal with stress in your lifeYOU are NOT the problem!
You may be surprised to hear this, but it's true. You see, the primary reason why stress keeps happening, over and over again in your life, is not because you are unable to get rid of it.
It's because you and I live in a world where stress is profoundly misunderstood. We have many misconceptions about stress that are very popular today, but that rob us of our natural abilities to deal with our stress successfully.
Three Popular Myths About Stress
Let's take a look at three very common beliefs about stress.
Please review each of the statements below and decide if you believe each is true:
1) Stress is something that actually exists.
2) The best way to deal with stress is to manage it.
3) Stress is primarily caused by external events, situations, and demands in our lives.
Most of us have been taught to believe all three of these statements are absolutely true. Actually, they are all myths, but very few people are aware of this.
So if you recognized one or more of these three popular beliefs to be FALSE, you should congratulate yourself. You are part of a very small group of people who have the courage to question popular wisdom about stress that prevails today, and that gets so many of us into trouble.
