You can’t beat “The Simpsons”

If there were one television show that stood out from all of the rest, having good episodes, bad episodes and still managing and maintaining a thriving audience, it would be The Simpsons. Honestly, it is a key cultural aspect of American society.

Originally premiering in 1989 on network television, although they had a stint on the Tracy Ullman Show a few years prior, the animated series entertained - and continues to entertain - millions of Americans with new episodes at least once a week while broadcasting reruns almost nightly on cable and satellite TV. And with over 21 seasons already completed, the variety of episode topics is almost unlimited. In fact, other such animated programs like South Park actually dedicated episodes to parodying The Simpsons, making fun of how many episodes they have already produced.

To be fair, the program really has covered every single topic imaginable, since they have around 450 episodes archived. Whether it is Homer going back to college or participating with a professional sports team more often the Springfield Isotopes or Bart cutting off the head on the town statue one of the first episodes to premiere The Simpsons have every issue covered.

Lately, they have started focusing their attention more towards current affairs, commenting on such specific political issues as gay marriage while at the same time satirizing societys obsession with new technology, poking fun at TIVO and high definition televisions, just to name a few. In some instances the plots become stale, but the majority of the stories argue and critique many issues prevalent in modern society.

And even though the show is an animated, prime time series, many religious groups actually support the program and praise it for its consistent incorporation of religion. Granted, the show never promotes or advertises religion to its audience, but the mere fact that the Simpsons, along with the whole town, attend weekly Church services represents a family and a show that cares about moral standards.

To top it off, a few years ago The Simpsons came out with a feature movie, transitioning from the small to the big screen. Although many criticized the movie for not incorporating more of the citizens of Springfield instead of focusing solely on the family, the film was still considered a hit by the majority of fans. Actually, it is now running the movie loop on most pay per view and movie channels on cable and satellite TV.

In addition, the show has crossed international borders, becoming one of the most popular programs in Europe and South America. In Argentina, for example, t-shirts of Homer Simpson and the family are seen on almost every street corner. Granted, the voices are dubbed and some of the dialogue requires changes in order to be culturally understood, but the stories remain in tact. In fact, many Americans living abroad expatriates actually attest that they prefer the dubbed voices to the originals. These are obviously personal preferences, since no one can beat Dan Castellanetas Homer Simpson voice. But no matter what, The Simpsons maintain their hold as the most successful show to ever appear on television.About the Author:
