Your Hiking Technique And How To Improve It
Hiking at a beginner or an intermediate level can present a number of challenges
for those not used to walking several miles at a time in what can often be difficult environments and harsh weather conditions.
In fact, many people would agree that a number of the world's most breathtakingly beautiful places are also the most inaccessible. The nature of hiking is such that hikers must 'earn' their right to find these beautiful locations by embarking on strenuous, sometimes dangerous walks through demanding environments before all their hard work can finally pay off. After reaching the top of Ben Nevis, the panoramic views afforded to those hardy enough to brave the elements and climb the 1,340 metres from the base to the summit are more than rewarding. However, whilst it is good to be ambitious, the reality is that nobody should consider climbing Ben Nevis or Kilimanjaro without proper first-hand knowledge and adequate preparation.
The first and most important way in which to improve your hiking technique is to plan and research well in advance. By researching the locations in which you intend on hiking and figuring out a schedule, you are far less likely to encounter problems. These range from simply taking a wrong turn, battling adverse weather conditions through to failing to allow yourself sufficient time to complete your intended route.
Setting yourself new challenges key to improving your hiking technique and your overall level of fitness. For example, one trip may involve completing a circuit of six miles of mixed terrain in a total time of 2 hours, including breaks. By completing the same circuit again, aiming to finish it in 1 hour 50 minutes, you are improving your fitness level and increasing your endurance.
Working as part of a group or society that arranges hiking trips can be hugely motivational and helps in combining social activities and leisure pursuits into a single event. A group may arrange a long three hour hiking circuit, perhaps followed by a trip to the pub for some refreshments. This will also be a source of motivation, as it will give you something to look forward to, just as your legs feel almost ready to buckle. If there are other more experienced members in your group then you should socialise with them and seek their advice. A first hand opinion based upon real experience is absolutely invaluable.
Another important tip in improving your hiking ability is to use
trekking poles when climbing steep mountain slopes. These help to improve balance and provide you with a firmer grip when you are addressing difficult terrain. Wear appropriate
hiking boots and clothing suited to the temperature and humidity and be sure to keep track of the weather forecasts. Mountain weather conditions can change dramatically in just a short space of time and it is essential to be prepared. Be sure to walk, jog or run at a consistent speed and avoid starting your circuit too quickly as this will cause fatigue later on. It is also important that you record your speed and devise a log to monitor your progress over the weeks and months.
