When collecting a new car it is important that you check it over in daylight
. Whilst it will not have been driven your car may still have been knocked between the factory and the garage. If it is dark note on the sales invoice that you were unable to inspect the car.
Start by walking around the car checking every panel. Pay particular attention to the bumpers. Bend down and look across the bonnet and down the sides of the car to spot any small dents. Most scrapes and bumps are to the corners of the car, so check these areas carefully too.
Check the inside for tears, marks, scuffs, or snags. Remove any mats to check the carpets for stains. Check in the boot that the spare and any tool kit that is provided are complete and in good condition.
Make sure the PDI (pre-delivery inspection) has been carried out. Also, check that the service book has been stamped to show that it has been done. If you are getting finance from the dealer read the terms and conditions and check that the details on the form are correct before signing it.
Fill out the VC5 and take the relevant sections with you when you leave. To prove ownership you need to have a copy of the sales invoice and receipt which will prove you have paid for the car as well.
Get the dealer to show you how everything works. Ensure that the instruction manuals are there and make sure you are given both sets of keys. Make a note of the salesperson's name and his contact number. It will be easier to sort out any issues if you contact the person who dealt with the delivery.
Before you drive off be sure that you have the relevant insurance documents with you in case you are stopped on the way home or have and accident. Make a note of the garage's service department, so you can contact them easily if you find a mechanical fault.
