Not focusing on building a list to my websites and blogs is a major mistake when

small business or professionals expand to an Internet presence.This is not only about growing the size of your list, increasing the numbers of people who visit your website and read your posts and newsletters. I am also referring to the loyalty of your list. Large numbers of visitors will do you no good if they do not consider you as one of the experts in your field, as a person with integrality and as some one who can help them solve their problems in your area of expertise whether it's knitting or playing poker or losing weight. It is up to you to figure out the balance needed between quantity and quality for your niche area but it will pay off in the long run.

To build your list you need an opt-in list of subscribers. These make up your customer base and data base which is why you need to pay attention and give it some time and effort.

An opt-in list is an email list of people who agreed to receive information from you in their email. If you send them business email messages without their permission, you are spamming. Not only does everyone despise spam but it is also against the law. The law also says you need to give your subscribers the option to unsubscribe whenever they want which is why you see those messages at the bottom of the emails written in a very small font size letting you know you can click there to remove your name from the mailing list.

Most auto responders include that in their emails from the business people you are following. You need to make sure that option is included in your email and remove the names of any requests you receive.


The point here is that if you send emails that are only intended to sell your programs or products, people are going to drop off your list. They will become like TV commercials; no one wants to listen to them. If you send only sales messages, you will be tagged with the label of someone who only wants to make money off their list rather than a person with expertise who is willing to share what she knows and bring value to her readers. Make yourself the go to person; you are THE RESOURCE.

The reason you want an Opt-In page or box on your website is to convert visitors into subscribers. To do that you need to give visitors a compelling reason why they should opt-in.

You could try excellent content that solves problems. You could include testimonials. You must include a good private policy that states you will not rent or sell or give away an email address.

Today, most people give away a free report that focuses on one aspect of their business. If you are a small landscaping company, for example, you may want to give away a 5 page report that explains how to know if the products you use for lawn maintenance are environmentally safe. If you are promoting a digital book that tells readers how to train Dobermans, you may want to give tips about how to socialize a Doberman with other dogs because you use a dog park.


Giving away a free report that is useful is an excellent way to attract visitors because you are offering them a benefit. Something that helps your readers increase their revenue or decrease their costs, allows them to sleep better at night or gives them more pleasure is likely to convert them to your list.

That means you blog or website should be targeted to your market, the people who could use whatever it is you are offering. You know who your market is when you know where they hang out, what motivates them, and what type of offer appeals to them. Once that takes place you have the opportunity to build your list if all your systems are in place such as your auto responder and what ever media you to use to promote to your list.

It takes time and effort to build a list, to build a good list that will bring you a future income. Take care of your lists in their early stages and they will become your breadwinners.
