Your Success Depends on How You Manage Time

Your Success Depends on How You Manage Time

The one thing in our life that we can never get back is Time. It is the one thing that must be used NOW. You cannot store it for another occasion so you need to use it as efficiently as possible.

In your business every little time you lose or waste, means it will just be that much longer before you will be able to make money...

So what do you need to do?

There are a number of things you can do; here are six actions that I think you should concentrate on.

1. Identify the common problems that may stand in your way. Are you an information gatherer? Do you spend too much time gathering information? Some people do this because they think they have to be an expert, not true. As long as you know more than someone else you are an expert. So put it all into one big folder and put it away out of sight (don't delete it - some of it can be useful later).

Do you have problems focusing? Could you be (subconsciously) afraid of success? Many people are - but once you know, you can get to work on it.

You cannot proceed until you have overcome this first step, now you can start working on your project.

2. The first and most important task is to identify your goals. What exactly do you want to accomplish? WHY? You're "why" must be clear and strong if it is not then the likelihood is that you may end up not doing it. So identifying your purpose is the first essential

Now you must set a time limit. So many projects just drift along because there is no delivery point. For instance - you want to create a business that will produce "X" amount of dollars every month. This gives you the incentive to do the work to achieve this goal but keep in mind that the growth will not be linear - it will be slow, becoming exponential towards the end.

3. Now you have your goals written down you need to get your tools prepared. For each goal write down a list of tasks that need to be completed. Then draw up a log, record in your log everything you have done - no matter how small it may seem. Now align your tasks with your calendar - setting time limits or targets. There are a number of different methods to do this both manual and automated, for example flow charts, dependency diagrams etc.

4. The next thing to do is to confront procrastination. Some people spend a lot of time preparing fancy charts to put of the fatal day when they have to do some work. You cannot travel to one destination by traveling two or three roads at once - you will only be running backwards and forwards. Stick to one "road". Identify possible distractions that may interfere with your routine and your accomplishments. If you feel you do not feel like doing something, try to figure out WHY. Create a sensible working environment for yourself - where you can work uninterrupted. But don't use it as an excuse not to do anything.

5. On your to do lists prioritise your tasks. By breaking them down into the smallest possible steps. Then put each task in priority. When in doubt, remember this - urgent may not be important. Urgent tasks require immediate attention - but not necessarily a lot of time. Important tasks require more time commitment. Keep in mind that 20 % of what you do, will produce 80 % of your results - so try and increase that 20 % if possible.

6. You need to be as efficient as possible so increase your productivity. Plan everything to be done in time blocks. Plan time blocks for daily and weekly targets, and plan personal time as well. You need to give yourself a break somewhere along the line. Or what you do will slowly deteriorate in quality.

If necessary start your day a little earlier, even 10 or 15 minutes - it adds up over time. Make sure that you are organized, - especially in your working space.

You will have interruptions from email, phone, and visitors so manage these. If you are working from home make sure that the family know that you are working and should not be disturbed. After a while they will get used to you being "at work". There is wasted time that needs to be managed such as watching TV, running errands (just plan these better), and learn to say NO.

If you follow these suggestions your project will proceed much more smoothly, but of course things will happen that need to be attended at once. By having a plan you can quickly recover and get back on track. So your business will be up and running and you can be making money sooner.
