Also known as the Spice Island, the Island of Zanzibar is located in the Indian Ocean forty kilometers off the coast of East Africa. It is called the Spice Island due to its export of cloves and other known spices. Explorers such as Speke, Livingstone, Burton and Vasco Da Gamma were the earliest visitors to the Island. This island is very historical. The people who passed enroute to India left their legacy behind. These include the Summarians, Egyptians, Indians, Chinese, Persians, Arabs and the British.

From this Island, European explorers ventured into the mainland. Zanzibar was for a long time a part of the powerful Oman Empire. Sultan Sayyid moved his capital from Muscat to Zanzibar to take advantage of the lucrative slave trade going on at the moment. iN 1946, Zanzibar and Pemba joined Tanganyika to form the United Republic of Tanzania. At this time the reign of Sultan Sayyid Said on the Island came to an end.

The Island is still developing as one of the most beautiful tourist attraction centers in the world. It has a unique combination of history, culture and friendly Swahili people who you will meet as you take a stroll in the ancient town or in the beautiful beaches. Zanzibar can be reached from Dar es Salaam, the capital city of Tanzania by taking a half hour flight. Driving, it can take you up to eight hours from the capital city. Its tranquility has survived due to the slow pace of life in the island.
