Srinagar: Dearth of staff, lack of infrastructure and other basic facilities have put the career of students at stake at North campus Baramulla of Kashmir University.

The students have threatened to withdraw their admissions if their problems were not addressed at the earliest. Expressing dismay over what the alleged callous attitude of authorities, the students said that their future was at stake due to the dearth of staff, lack of infrastructure and other basic facilities.

As if this was not enough, the laboratories for conducting practicals were also not available. "We are anticipating a bleak future due to the multiple problems, most importantly the dearth of staff and lack of infrastructure. Some times Mathematics is taught by the Physics teacher and often the math subject is not taught. Even the laboratories for conducting practicals are also not available, which is a must for science subjects," a group of students told Agence India Press while threatening to withdraw admissions if their problems were not addressed.

The much- hyped B-tech programme was introduced in March last year but so far only first semester examination of students has been held. The B-tech and MCA programs are pursued in one building, which is causing immense sufferings to students. Students said that at the time of introducing B-tech course, the authorities promised all facilities including permanent faculty but so far nearly one year has passed but nothing has been done.

At least 60 students are enrolled in B tech course. The students said that they have not even seen Electrical Science teacher as yet and English teacher was made available a month before the examination. "We don't know who the head of institution is? Many a times we are referred from one teacher to other for redresser of problems but on the ground nothing is done," students said

The dismayed students also alleged that their classes are seldom taken on proper time and sometimes they return home dejected without classes. "Many a times, we gave representations to the higher authorities to replace the inexperienced teachers but always our please fell on deaf ears. So far, we have not been able to complete even a small portion of our syllabus. We are made to suffer without any fault of ours and ironically authorities continue to ignore us," students alleged.

Some students rued that they got themselves admitted in biotechnology course. They said that so far they have not even seen their teacher, not to speak of taking a class. Ironically there is lone permanent teacher for MCA and all others are appointed on contractual basis.

When Agence India Press Contacted Director North Campus, Farooq Ahmed said, "More staff would be Recruitment soon to address the problems of the students. The administration is also trying to address other problems including infrastructure, laboratories and other basic facilities." The summer unrest caused a huge academic loss to the students, he added. (AIP)
