The most significant finding we've drawn relates to the use of visual texts and open-ended, authentic questions as sources for writing. These youth were initially challenged by the unrestricted nature of the task of addressing questions with visual responses: They were accustomed to mixing media (e.g., images and text) in their out-of-school literacy practices, but they were not as familiar with blending these modes in school-like activities.
