An electric comb binder that is meant for medium sized organizations and daily use, the Akiles Megabind 1E includes some features that smaller binding systems don't. Here is a quick rundown of this machine's strengths and weaknesses as we see them.Strengths: 1.) Akiles is quickly becoming known for making a tough and rugged machine, and the Megabind 1E is definitely that. Made up almost entirely of metal, all of the major components appear...more
As the smallest of Akiles' comb binding systems, the Offibind 21D is intended for use in small or home offices, or for businesses on a very tight budget. Here is a short report on this machine, featuring a list of what we consider to be its relative strengths and weaknesses.Strengths: 1.) The Offibind 21D appears to us to be more feature-rich than any of its similarly-priced competition. First of all, this machine offers the user a handy depth of margin control, which is important for ensuring the usability and durability of books and booklets no matter the size. We've discovered that this is a feature that is usually only found on machines costing much more than the Offibind 21D. With this function, the user can manually set the distance from the paper's edge in which the machine punches the hole in the paper in tiny increments, whereas other machines in this price range just have two to four presets. In practical terms, this gives you the option of using three-sixteenths plastic combs, a size that is not recommended for machines without this feature. 2.) Another feature that really adds to the flexibility of the Offibind 21D is the three disengageable pins which are...more

It seems that Akiles has looked to fill a gap in the marketplace with the WireMac Duo. As the only machine available to consumers that can bind documents with either a two to one or three to one pitch hole pattern, the WireMac Duo offers users some unprecedented flexibility. Here are some of the strengths and weaknesses of this machine as we see them.Strengths: 1.) Of course one of the WireMac Duo's biggest strengths is its ability to punch in either a two to one or three to one pitch ratio. If you consider that you can use the three to one pitch punch with wire-o, spiral coil, or GBC Proclick, and that the two to one pitch punch can utilize double loop and spiral coil, you actually have the possibility of five separate binding styles with the WireMac Duo. That is a lot of flexibility for a machine at this price point, and perhaps one of the reasons the WireMac Duo seems to be growing in popularity. 2.) This machine features a pair of punching throats, each of them 14 inches in length. What this gives you is the ability to punch any document that is legal sized or smaller. While this is a great capacity, it is important to note that the open throat design and the fully...more
