The drug heroin comes from the opium poppy which was used for a variety of things as early as 3400 BC

. When heroin was first discovered in 1874 by a German scientist it was to be called Diacetylmorphine. The drug remained quite the same for almost 25 years when another scientist was trying to develop a form of codeine and instead produced a drug which we know today as heroin, at this time it was said to be 1 and times stronger than morphine. Being that it was much more potent than the most popular pain relieving drug of the day morphine and little did they know of the debilitating side effects of heroin addiction that would soon follow.

The new drug was soon marketed by today's well know pharmaceutical company Bayer and called heroin. The name came from a German word that basically meant heroic and was coined this because of its heroic effects. It was to be used as a morphine substitute and cough suppressant. Morphine was a very popular recreational drug but was very addicting and when the new drug heroin was marketed it was said to be non addicting. I would be will to bet that they wish they could take that statement back because this drug is one of the most addicting drugs know to man.

The heroin drug would soon have one of the highest rates of dependence or in other words heroin addiction amongst its users. At this time heroin addicts were very unfortunate because they did not know how to perform a proper heroin detox or to treat addiction back then so the addicts were simply put in an asylum and pretty much forgotten about.

Today drug addicts are more fortunate to say the least because for practically every addicting drug known there is a corresponding drug rehab facility where the addict can be treated for heroin addiction as well as many other narcotic drugs like for example, hydrocodone which can be obtained from ones physician.

In today's world heroin addiction is on the rise again, it seems our youth have taking a liking to smoking this drug or as they prefer to call it chasing the dragon. There you will meet others just like yourself who are trying to recover from drug addiction. You will be required to attend 12 step meetings, group, lectures, and individual therapy sessions. This is to help you to learn how to stay clean when you leave rehab.
