The first question is what will you be using the camera for? Will it be for documenting your family or will you want to be more creative and be a digital artist. If you're looking to just take pictures without worrying about changing lenses then I would recommend a point and shoot camera. Now that we have narrowed the search down to a point and shoot camera the next step is to look at the features on a camera such as the zoom, image stabilisation and megapixel count.
I usually recommend going for a camera with the largest zoom you can afford simply because sometimes the photo we need to take is a little further away than we can reach, having a super zoom digital camera can help out a lot and this is why I recommend them.
The next point is image stabilisation. Camera manufacturers are quick enough to point out that their camera zooms x amount of times however what they don't tell you is that if you zoom out to the maximum then chances are your picture will start to blur because of camera shake. Cheap cameras won't have anything to stop this shake but the best point and shoot cameras on the market have image stabilisation and I highly recommend you getting a camera with this feature.
Megapixel count is next on the list. I always tell beginner photographers that megapixel count doesn't really matter unless you're looking to enlarge your picture dramatically. Anything above 10 megapixels is more than enough.
