I'm the first to admire the strengths and virtues of the free-enterprise model as it applies to drug development and sales. This model encourages drug companies to employ talented people and to take risks in developing new drugs for serious medical problems. But let's face it, current practices also produce undesirable effects.1. When their drug that was wonderful last month is suddenly no good. It's been entertaining to watch the...more
Even excellent tools can be mis-used. Here are seven "sins" of medical testing:1. Ordering the wrong test for the right condition. If I had a nickel for every time a doctor ordered a carotid artery test in a patient with a fainting spell, I could fund my retirement several times over. And this is despite the fact that problems with the carotid arteries (the pulsating blood-vessels in the front of the neck) are incapable of generating...more
Preventing hair loss in ways that avoid harsh chemicals or potentially harmful drugs can be very important to those who have begun to experience the loss of scalp hair. The first thing they need to understand, though, is that there are usually genetic or environmental factors that contribute to what medical professionals call alopecia. If not addressed, alopecia can eventually cause baldness. For most men and women, the onset of alopecia can be traced back to several limited factors. In almost all cases, such factors have an androgenic component, which means that there are usually hormones in the body responsible for creating loss. Hair follicles on the scalp become abnormally sensitive to a certain hormone named dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which contributes to alopecia. Androgenic alopecia is more commonly known as male pattern baldness, though women are just as likely to suffer from it as men. In some studies conducted by exercise physiologists, the overabundance or under abundance of testosterone or dihydrotestosterone after intense aerobic exercise has been linked to androgenic alopecia, though other studies seem to dispute this finding. Regardless, more men and...more

One of the questions I am often asked is - can you actually make a good salary working from home in medical billing? Is it possible to be home-based? If you're making a salary, it means you're working as an employee for a medical billing business or a doctor's office or clinic if they do not send out their billing work. Most billing work is handled by the billing services businesses for many reasons. If you are working from home you would likely be working for yourself and paying yourself, not getting a salary from a company. The software that's used costs a lot of money and takes specialized training, for one thing and may make it prohibitive. They also usually don't need to have outside employees. If you work from home in processing insurance claims or medical billing, you have to set up a medical billing business at home. Although it's been done and is done, most billing specialists and assistants and other people who have billing training, education and experience work from billing services or large clinics that still do their billing work in-house.One has to be careful about the ads they see promising fantastic amounts of money that one can make in medical billing. They run...more
