Scientific Submission Wrestling Conditioning is a topic that is often raised to me by my competitive grappling clients. I myself am a keen grappler- I train in BJJ at least 3-4 times per week and it is always noticed that my strength and condition is my best asset. Scientific wrestling conditioning I believe is one of the most important aspects of the grappling game across the whole submission arts. Without a strong strength base your game will suffer.
Scientific wrestling conditioning is actually fairly simple. In today's world a lot of unnecessary techniques and bluff have been introduced by the fitness community mainly to make money out of the rising interest in mixed martial arts, bjj, and wrestling. It's a shame as a lot of the techniques that wrestlers and MMA fighters have used for years are being side lined in favour of more and more outlandish techniques.
First and foremost I believe in first the specific training itself must take precedence i.e. if you want to grapple then grapple as much as possible this is where the main share of your cardio conditioning should come from. All the fighter specific circuits in the world won't equal a good roll on the mat for specificity. Circuits should be the icing on an all ready baked caked. If you can't fit in any more mat time, then by all means add some circuits in to supplement your training- however mat time should never be sacrificed for circuit training.
Secondly a good strength base is essential. This should come from standard periodised compound lifting with barbells, dumbbells and cables. The essential lifts being the squat, deadlift, power clean, bench press, close grip bench press, bent over rows, standing cable rows, dumbbell rows and chins. Scientific wrestling conditioning has to revolve around the increase of strength. With strength comes power. I've seen a lot of people with an excellent CV base gas against a stronger less fit opponent simply because they are exerting 100% of power while the stronger opponent is only working at about 50% capacity.
