This is not a wildlife watcher''s best shot at spotting the
Bengal Tiger considering there are less than 40 of them that inhabit an area of 777sq.km but there"s plenty of other game like the Nilgiri langoor, Nilgiri tahr, bison, deer, antelope and about 700 elephants to make the trip worthwhile.
Periyar National Park is blessed with a variety of flora and fauna which makes it a paradise for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiast. But the playful elephants of this park "" 800 in number, will undeniably grab all your attention. It is indeed a paradise of elephants!
ShoppingThere is not much scope for shopping here except the Government souvenir shops that allow you to pick up mementos and trinklets to take back home.
Night OutThere are several restaurants outside the park including some fairly posh ones. Inside the park it is a different matter all together. The Rest Houses provide cooks, but supplies have to be carried in by visitors.
ActivitiesGo for a wildlife safari in a jeep or an elephant back. A more popular way of touring the park is by taking a boat ride on the Periyar Lake.

In addition, over a hundred species
of butterflies and at least 240 species of birds inhabit the area. Around the park are some interesting aromatic spice gardens. Many have good guides who will willingly tell the visitors about the medicinal value of each spice and maybe startle most people with lots of information on research that is millennia old.
How to get there by AirThe closest airport to Periyar is not in Kerela but in Madurai(140 km) in Tamil Nadu. In Kerela Thekkady is the closest to Kochi International Airport(190 km).
How to get there by RailThe nearest railhead is Kottayam from where the wildlife sanctuary is a 4 hour drive relatively marginally less by car.
How to get there by BusThe sanctuary is well connected by by bus to many towns in kerela and neighbouring Tamil Nadu including Ernakulam(6 hours), Kottayam (4 hours), Thiruvananthpuram (8 hours), Kovalam (9 hours), Munnar (4 1/2 hours) and Kodaikanal (6 hours).
Best time to VisitThe tourist season is from September to May and particularly the Christmas - New Year holidays. From February onwards it starts getting warmer and though this could be distinctly uncomfortable, it has its benefits. The animals are easiest to spot now as elephant and chital (spotted deer) alike
flock to the waterholes. Avoid weekends when the park can get quite full with people looking for a daylong getaway.
