Working for a company in an office may not be your idea of an ideal career it certainly isnt mine

. But people who work in this type of environment do have an advantage when it comes to support. In an office, there are almost always people to turn to when you want to brainstorm, or talk an idea through, or hear someones opinion of what works and what doesnt. Since so many entrepreneurs work alone, it can be difficult to know where to turn for the advice, support and inspiration we sometimes need to reach new heights in our careers.

This is where a Mastermind group can be invaluable.

A Mastermind Group may sound like a newfangled idea, but its actually been around since the days of the Industrial Revolution. Back then, famed steel magnate Andrew Carnegie assembled a team of 50 men to help him think of new ways to capture the market with his product. Author Napoleon Hill went on to label Carnegies brain trust a Mastermind Group in his game-changing 1937 book Think and Grow Rich, defining the concept as a coordination of knowledge and effort, in a spirit of harmony, between two or more people, for the attainment of a definite purpose.

What constitutes a Mastermind Group has changed a bit since Carnegies day. While his group was created with the sole purpose of helping Carnegie achieve his goals, today, most Mastermind groups are designed to help a group of people usually less than 50! each achieve their own goals. Mastermind Groups accomplish this by:Making each member a part of a group of people dedicated to mutual success. Exposing each member to the ideas, feedback and even criticism of other like-minded entrepreneurs. Allowing members to network with others, gaining access to their connections and resources. Forcing each member to be accountable and stay focused on their goals. Giving members a regular opportunity to escape the everyday and look at their businesses with a new perspective. So how does one go about becoming part of a Mastermind Group? The easiest way is to find and join an existing group. Ask the business people you know if there is a group in your area, or check online to see if any local groups appeal to you. You can also find Mastermind Groups through larger business organizations like the Glazer Kennedy Insiders Circle and others.If you cant find anything that works for you, you can also start your own Mastermind group by telling people who you admire about it and inviting them to join. They dont even need to be in your local area while formal meetings where everyone talks in person are preferable, you can conduct your Mastermind sessions however works best for your group through conference calls or even email discussions.What matters most is taking the time to regularly open your mind to the opinions of others, as well as dedicating an hour a month to working on your business, not in your business.
