3 Ways to Fireproof Your House and Enhance Home Security

Nothing is more devastating than a fire. What was once a beautiful structure that hosted your family and held your memories is now a smoldering pile of rubble and ash. Fires have no empathy or consideration they do not stop to spare a family heirloom, or even a human life. That is why it is of the upmost importance that you fireproof your house when looking to enhance your home security. Because what good is that rod-iron fence and that high-tech home alarm system if one knocked-over candle could consume it all in an orange flame? Here are three simple tips to help you protect your home.

1. Install a smoke detector, and keep it on.

Public buildings have to have smoke detectors and, often, sprinkler systems as well to ensure that any fire is detected early and those inside can get out in the case of an emergency. So make sure your home is up-to-date. If you rent, look into the local laws. Your landlord may be required to keep an active smoke detector in the house, in which case you aren't the one who should be parting with their money. And, just like a home alarm system, smoke detectors are useless if they aren't turned on. So try to place it in a location where it won't go off every time you cook something on the stovetop and keep it activated. This way, if a fire does happen, your family will be able to exit the house in time and call the fire department. With any luck, damage will be minimal as opposed to if the fire raged on for an hour undetected.

2. Put a fire extinguisher in the kitchen.

The kitchen is one of the easiest places to start a fire, especially for novice cooks. Burnt popcorn, grease spillover on an open flame there are numerous ways that your culinary adventures could end in disaster. So keep a small fire extinguisher in the kitchen so that you can put out a small fire before it becomes a big, uncontrollable one. And learn how to use it! You don't want to be fumbling around and trying to read the directions when there's a raging inferno on your stovetop.

3. Never, ever smoke in bed!

Or when you're particularly sleepy for that matter. This is one of those cases in which abstinence is the only 100% effective method many would tell you not to smoke in the house in general, or not to smoke period but if you want to grab a cigarette, you need to make sure you're considering your overall home security, not just your need for nicotine. Smoking in bed is dumb for two reasons. One, you can fall asleep with a smoldering cigarette in your hand. Two, you're surrounded in highly flammable bedding. So make sure to sit up, in a less fabric-dense setting, and use an ashtray. And when you're done, don't throw the cigarette directly into a trashcan, even if you stamp it out. Let it sit in an ashtray for a couple of hours, or run water over it.
