4 Questions To Ask Yourself Before You Buy A Car

For many, the purchase of a new car is a big deal and one of the largest purchases they will ever make. You will probably be spending a lot of your hard earned money and so you should not make the decision lightly. Whatever you do, do not let a car dealer talk you into buying a vehicle that you cannot afford. Ask yourself the following 4 questions prior to choosing the car.

1. Why buy a new car? The answer could be that the size of your family has outgrown the size of your current vehicle. Possibly your car needs a lot of repairs and it will actually cost less money to buy another vehicle then it will to fix the current one.

2. How much can I afford? This is a question that you need to make sure to answer honestly. If you have a very good credit score, you might find yourself being approved for a bigger car loan than you can actually handle. Although a car salesperson or lender may try to talk you into more, only you know how much you are actually going to be comfortable spending. Be sure to review your budget to determine how much you can spend on a monthly payment for your car. Do not forget to add in car maintenance and car insurance while you are at it.

3. Can I afford a down payment? Even if the dealer or lender will let you buy your vehicle without money down, it is always better to have a down payment. If you do not put any money down, you risk having the amount you owe be more than your car is actually worth. If that happens, you will lose money if you decide to sell your car.

4. What type of vehicle should I buy? Today there are a lot of vehicles to choose from. You can choose a compact, a station wagon, a sedan, an SUV, a truck or a minivan. Should you choose a hybrid? It is important to remember that a vehicle is not an investment; it will not be worth more over time. You need to not only consider what you can afford, but the size of your family, what you will be carrying in it and where you will be travelling with it. For example, if you are going to use it strictly to travel to work and back, a hybrid might be a wise choice to save on gas mileage. If you have a large family and do a lot of camping and the kids are all involved in football, you might not want to consider buying a compact.

These are just some of the questions to ask yourself before you make your final decision on your new car purchase. Although looking for a new vehicle can be an exciting time, it is important to make sure that you do not get in over your head with a payment that you cannot afford.
