4 Ways to Improve Your Organizational Skills
4 Ways to Improve Your Organizational Skills
Being organised is the key to success. We need organization in everything we do and in every step of our lives, be it at school, through university and of course, in our careers. Even tasks at home require organization. Cooking a meal and grocery shopping wouldn't go well if you hadn't make preparations. So just how can we improve our organizational skills?
1. Make a list of things to do
Lists are very important as it is an organization of the things to do. Without a list, we could forget an item or two, or lose our focus on what's important. By having a list, we are able to prioritise and of course, make sure that we have sights on what is to do and what has yet to be done. Make a list before the start of each day. This applies to other things as well, be it grocery shopping, things to bring, people to meet and so on.
2. Have a planner
Bring a diary or a planner with you throughout your day. You can either use just a notebook, an old diary or an electronic one such as a PDA. Put appointments and meetings into this planner with an alarm that goes off a day or two in advance if you think it's necessary. This ensures that you will not forget as well as are well-prepared for the event.
3. Make notes
This is when your planner or diary comes in handy. These notes can be reminders of things to do or little items that can contribute to your career's development. For example, you might want to jot down what a client enjoys reading so that you can bring this up during the next meeting as a topic of conversation. This leads to a good rapport with the client, they would be impressed that you made an effort and they'd think that they had left a mark on you! It has been known also that writing things down helps you to remember them better. So taking down notes is very much encouraged.
4. Prepare for the next day
"Failure to plan is planning to fail". How many times have you heard that saying before but have you actually taken any steps to plan? Before you call it a day each night, take out your planner and go through the next day's activity. Knowing what to expect the next day makes you better prepared. Also check the list of items on the to-do list. If there is anything that has yet to be done, move it to the next day's list.
Getting organised isn't difficult after all. These four simple steps ensure that you are a step ahead of the others in organizational skills.
