5 Industries You Can Work In After Audio Engineering Training
Everyone who enrolls in audio engineering school has a deep appreciation for sound
. But not everyone is slated to work in the same industry. Audio engineering training opens many doors. Graduates may wish to look for jobs in the theatre, in film, on cruise ships, in radio or in the corporate world, where help is often needed with audio logistics for events and presentations.
Theatre
Some seek audio engineering training out of a love for the theatre, out of a desire to become a sound technician. This can involve different responsibilities, depending on the production.
Some common responsibilities of audio engineering training grads employed in the theatre:
-working a mixing console
-playing pre-recorded sounds
-handling microphones
Like many of the jobs that audio engineering school graduates qualify for, working in theatre sound may require travel.
Film
Another industry that employs graduates of audio engineering classes is the film industry. Again, there are different ways to have an audio career in the film world. Audio engineering training can prepare students for a career as:
-a sound designer (using audio engineering school techniques to create sound effects to match the action on the screen)
-sound supervisor
-production mixer
-sound editor
Audio engineering school grads who work in this industry usually work on the film once it had been filmed, with some planning beforehand. There are some exceptions of course, including Dogme 95 films, where sound design is incorporated in the filming. Every sound must be natural, part of the scene at the time of filming, not tacked on afterwards.
Cruise ships
Cruise lines are in the business of creating atmosphere and providing relaxation and entertainment. Music is one of the key tools! As such, cruise lines often employ graduates of audio engineering training programs to produce pleasing sound effects, to produce musical theatrical productions, to make sure that PA systems and microphones are all in working order, etc. Some cruise ships even have on-board discos, that feature a lot of audio technology requiring proper attention and maintenance.
Radio
Radio stations are another potential employer for graduates of
audio engineering classes. They are needed to ensure broadcasting quality, as well as to handle music and sound effects.
Corporate audio
We sometimes forget but organizations often need audio engineering school grads to help them prepare for large events such as conferences. There can be sound systems and music to consider. Many organizations use corporate videos, another area calling for audio engineering school expertise. Organizations may want to consult a sound technician in search of permanent in-house presentation solutions. They may need sound effects for a single presentation, or even for their website.
If you are contemplating audio engineering training, then you clearly have some thinking to do in order to narrow down your career choices.
