5 Ways Of Improving Self Esteem

Most of us at some time other will need to find ways of improving self esteem

. Self esteem encompasses the many aspects that create the picture that we have of ourselves. In our minds we have a picture of how we look, who we are and what our strengths and weaknesses might be. The term for this is self image, which we start to develop at a very young age.

Research has shown that prolonged low self esteem can lead to disappointing life outcomes, combined with economic and social problems. It is difficult to define the cause of low self esteem issues, as different studies have highlighted different problems. An example of this is that some studies have shown the ills of society can lead to low self esteem, while others have shown that this is irrelevant to social and individual problems.

There are ways of dealing with low self esteem which can be put into practise during everyday life.

#1. Be Positive. Always look for the positive side in any situation, it feels much better be positive in an adverse environment. You will not be improving self esteem by taking a negative view and no doubt this will lead to negative experiences. Losing a job viewed in a positive way could mean the door opening on great new opportunities.


#2. Face your fears. We all have things that we are afraid of, be it physical objects or situations. Facing up to those fears can give you a real buzz and a sense of achievement when you take on those challenges and do something you have been scared of in the past. These may only be small challenges but you will feel good about yourself afterwards.

#3. Socialising. Try to socialise with positive people. This will have the knock on effect on you for improving self esteem and building a positive outlook on life. People who are kind and treat you with respect will make you feel good about yourself. Being around negative people will drag you down and lower your self esteem.


#4. Get Motivated. Being able to get yourself motivated is a great way for improving self esteem and for developing a belief that you can achieve whatever you want. Motivation could be triggered by a sporting event, music or by the achievements of someone else. Your motivation will ensure that you ultimately succeed.

#5. Persistence. Try not to give up on things too easily. At times things may go wrong, but that doesn't mean failure. By being persistent achieving the right results can be all the more satisfying. This will help build your confidence, knowing that you can do tasks that have been set for you.

Don't be afraid to give yourself credit when you complete or achieve something that you thought was beyond yourself. Try to recognise when you have done something to be proud of, because this will help with improving self esteem and building self confidence. Valuing yourself will make you feel good about yourself; you will then appreciate your own worth. Take pride in your abilities and accomplishments. People often believe they would be much more successful if they could feel better about themselves.
