6 No Brainer Ways to Get the Kids Out of the House
6 No Brainer Ways to Get the Kids Out of the House
It seems like when I was a kid, my mom had to struggle to get me to come inside. My siblings and I would spend endless summer days roaming the hills near my home, playing war through the woods, building forts, and even just lying back in the tall grass and watching the clouds. These days, kids are a bit different, and if you're like a lot of modern parents, you might be wondering how to get them out of the house and away from the video game so they can get some much-needed fresher air, sunshine, and exercise.1. Tell Them to Go OutsideHey, you're the parenttake control. I'll tell you what, my mom might have had some trouble finding us when it was time to round everyone up for the night, but when it came to us getting a little too hyper or rough-housing in the living room, a good ole' "Take it outside now!" was all it took to send us scrambling. Now, things were a bit different back then, and if you hollered like my mom used to, your neighbors might start looking at you a little different. But that doesn't mean you should put your foot down when it's time.2. Take Them OutsideWhile we're at ittake your kids outside yourself. I'm not talking about dragging them out there by their feet; what I'm saying is that if you pack some lunches and head out for a hiking trip or the beach, your children will indeed be outdoors enjoying themselves. We could all use a little activity and fresh air.3. Get Involved at the Rec CenterPurchasing a membership or finding a free rec center with lots of kids your age is a good way to get them out and about and active. Most centers have some great dance and martial art classesas well as baseball diamonds and basketball courts.4. Enroll Them in Organized SportsWhat about sports? This is a great way to start building responsibility, work ethic, and healthy habits at a young age. Not to mention your kids can be off doing what they do while you're tending to the responsibilities of an over-worked modern adult. Some great outdoor sports include soccer, baseball, football, swimming, and cheerleading.5. Put Together an Activity CenterFinally, a great way to motivate your kids to be less sedentary and more active is to make your yard a little more inviting. There are all kinds of things you can do. Set up a rope swing. Make or buy a basketball hoop. Organize an outdoor living area. Purchase a botchee set. Or go all out and buy a nice set of swings, a trampoline, and an above-ground poolthese things are much more affordable these days.
