6 Simple Tips to Fight Fatigue and Strengthen Energy Levels

If you feel tired, with low energy levels, follow these 6 simple tips to fight fatigue

, improve your energy, and put the zing back into your life...

1. Take Regular Breaks

We all tend to live very busy, active lives these days and it is easy to overwork and deplete our energy. Taking regular breaks during the day is an important way of keeping our energy levels up. This doesn't necessarily mean taking loads of time out, even just a few minutes here or there can make all the difference.

If you have been sitting, get up and stretch your legs. If standing, sit down to relax for a minute or two. If you have been using your brain, gaze into the distance and allow your mind to relax. Make sure your body is relaxed and that you aren't holding any tension and take a few deep breaths. If you get into the habit of doing this a few times during the day you will quickly notice the difference.

2. Exercise

Whilst some of us get plenty of exercise, the general trend is towards a more sedentary lifestyle, particularly for office and clerical workers - It is ironic but being sedentary makes you feel tired, and exercise gives you more energy!

You should try to get some exercise every day. This doesn't have to mean a vigorous workout at the gym, a brisk walk to or from work may be enough. The most important thing is to make it regular. Gauge how much exercise you need on how you feel afterwards. Obviously for serious cases of low energy such as ME/CFS it is important not to overdo it . If you feel exhausted when you finish then you have done too much!

3. Fresh Air and Daylight

The air quickly becomes stale in buildings, especially if they are air-conditioned, and this can really sap your energy. In Chinese medicine it is said that when we are outside during the day we absorb Qi from the sunlight and the environment. This is especially true if we are surrounded by nature and clean air. Try to get out into a natural unpolluted space whenever you can.

While this isn't always possible, especially if you live in a city, it is still worth trying to get outside for some fresh air and daylight every day. A stroll in the countryside or local park is good exercise, helps you to relax, and gets you out in the fresh air. At the very least, make sure that you open a window a little to allow fresh air inside.

4. Learn To Relax

Slumping in front of the TV doesn't refuel and refresh you the way real relaxation can... Relaxation is a skill, and has to be learnt! Deep breathing is a good way to begin, try and breathe from the lower abdomen. You may find Yoga, T'ai Chi, Qi Gong or Meditation useful.

Any 'down time' that you can get will help you to recharge your batteries and keep your energy levels up. If you have a busy life, don't see this as an optional extra but as a daily necessity! Again, regularity is most important. Better to do 5 minutes per day than 2 hours once per week (though 2 hours once per week is a lot better than nothing!)

5. Sleep

It goes without saying that getting enough sleep is vital. It is during our sleep that the body heals, repairs and rebuilds. Everybody needs a different amount of sleep, most people need between 6-8 hours per night, with gradually less as they get older. According to Chinese thought, getting to sleep early is the most beneficial. Aim for before 11pm if you can.

6. Fluid Intake

Dehydration is a common cause of low energy levels. Rather than sticking to a certain number of cups of water per day you can best judge how hydrated you are by the colour of your urine. It should be the colour of pale straw. Darker than that means that you are dehydrated, so drink more water.

Caffeine and other stimulants should be avoided - the energy that they appear to give you is simply a drain on the system. Long term or regular use of stimulants has a strongly depleting effect.
