7-step Guide On How To Improve Self Esteem

Self esteem is broadly how we feel about ourselves

. Our self esteem develops as we journey through life every day, it is not something that we are blessed with the moment we are born. Everybody wants a life full of success and happiness; but this is often difficult to attain, particularly for those who have low self-esteem. Good thing there are things we can do to better our self esteem. However, you can't change your self esteem overnight, this would take a lot of effort and time, in other words determination. Here are 7 steps on how to improve self esteem:

Step 1. Stop comparing yourself with other people. Inasmuch as you are more talented or gifted than others, there are also others who have more than what you have. You will find yourself feeling short very often if you keep on playing the comparison game.

Step 2. Assess your problems realistically. You have to have a realistic evaluation of your problems so you can find the perfect solutions for them. For example, traffic and a bad hair day won't become problems if you don't assess them as such. Life will always have bumps and setbacks, you have to accept that it will never be perfect. You will be able to react to day-to-day life events more appropriately if your assessment of things are realistic.

Step 3. Be surrounded by people who support you and make you feel positive at all times. The people that surrounds us have a significant influence on how we feel about ourselves. Being with people who constantly make you feel inferior would do you no good. On the other hand, when you are accepted and inspired, you Feel Better About yourself. This is the best possible environment to nurture your self-esteem.


Step 4. Determine the things that make you feel bad about yourself. Pinpoint which areas in your life are actually pulling your self esteem down and avoid them or better yet, find ways to improve them. For example, if you catch yourself feeling bad often because of your appearance then work on making yourself look better--work out and wear the right clothes.

Step 5. Stop being your own worst critic. If you keep on criticizing and pulling yourself down, you will never develop a healthy level of self esteem. Rather, fill your head with positive affirmations. Positive affirmations allow you to experience positive and motivating feelings. Whether speaking about the way you look, your profession, your relationships, your financial situation, or any other aspects of your life, avoid self-deprecating comments. If you don't like and believe in yourself, chances are, no one else would!


Step 6. Act! You will not develop high self-esteem if you sit on the sidelines and retreat from challenges. When you take action--regardless of the ensuing result, you will feel better about yourself. If you let your fear and anxiety hold you back from taking action, you will end up feeling frustrated, sad and dissatisfied with yourself.

Step 7. Be forgiving when all your plans don't succeed. As humans we are bound to fall short sometimes. So instead of being resentful about the whole thing, readjust your goals or try harder next time. Just look at each failure as a stepping stone towards reaching your goal.

Not a lot of people understand how much impact low self esteem can have on a person's life. Fortunately, we have control over what we choose to do with the self-esteem that we have.
