Medication along with behavioral treatments is an essential part of addiction treatment.The addiction treatment is mostly based on a combination of medication and behavioral therapy. The treatment begins with detoxification during which treatment withdrawal symptoms manifest themselves. This is a painful phase and is made bearable with the use of medications under medical supervision. This phase takes up about a week to 10 days after which the system is cleansed of the toxins and the patient no longer has that overriding desire to take alcohol or drugs. The next step is counseling, group discussion and therapies so that this state of recovery is stabilized and made permanent.All the while during his phase of addiction an individual tends to develop more negative and self destructive thoughts, partly due to his own addiction and as a response to the effects his addiction has on his near and dear ones, his co-workers and society. During therapy he is made to undergo a change of mind. Therapy will work towards removing this negative self image and infusing positive, outward looking thoughts. A person who has become withdrawn from society and the world has now got the wherewithal to face it again after induction of therapeutic skills and counseling. Substance addiction is basically a behavioral problem and people who are most vulnerable to it are adolescents, college students and socialites. They need to understand they don't have to drink, or consume drugs to become popular, or simply to get high. In fact abusing these substances can cause severe health disorders like cancer, cirrhosis of the liver, heart attacks and can also cause death in case of overdose.Behavioral treatment is the most important part of the addiction treatment. The patient is counseled to improve his/ her attitude and approach towards life, and for this isolation and residential care at the center work as effective alternative. At the residential treatment rehab center the patients stay in close proximity with doctors and therapists and start looking at life from a different perspective. They get motivation to lead a drug free life when they see improvements in interpersonal relationship of ex abuser's life.There are also some great treatment programs for out patients but here the patients and family and friends need to be a very careful and have to maintain a drug free environment at home and work place. They have to make sure that the patient makes no contact with his/ her fellow addicts. Cognitive behavior therapy brings about a change through the patient's willful efforts to understand his condition, the causes leading to such a condition and the effective course of action from here on. In multi dimensional family therapy, the patients are counseled along with the family and together they help the patient to overcome drug abuse. Motivational intervention is another therapy where positive reinforcements are heightened by the therapist and the patient is encouraged to abstain from drugs.There is a saying that you cannot clap with one hand. In addiction treatment only the therapist working hard will not achieve the desired result. The patient too has to respond with equal fervor and reciprocate the efforts in order to bring about a change for the better and sustain his recovery for life.
