It goes through the torch head to form an arc when the torch comes in contact with the material to be cut. Also, note that these machines do not cut any of the CNC applications.

You can use plasma to cut thin and thick materials effectively; in fact a hand held torch can often be used to cut certain materials. All you need to do is consider the process carefully as these need to be cut with very close precision.
