A College Education Within Reach: Obama Grants For Mothers
For many people, a bright future starts with good education
. Since running for office in 2008, President Barack Obama has made education a priority issue for his administration. Many important people are focused on increasing scholarship opportunities and improving education.
College expenses continue to increase even as the economy slumps. Scholarship packages rarely cover the full amount for tuition, books and housing. With high costs looming, many young adults can't afford to go to a university. One group that is particularly hit hard is single mothers. Educating women and single moms is important to increase the workforce and help provide for children and families. It's important to the President and that's why he's implemented a program for scholarships for mothers. If you've heard of Obama grants for moms, know that people are referring to Federal Pell Grants. These grants award a student over $5,000 to go to college. This is over $1,000 above the previous maximum, and it's a big help to moms who want to return to school. The scholarship money covers practically all school-related expenses.
Another incentive to consider is the American Opportunity Tax Credit. This program allows the first $4,000 of education expenses to be free. This is a worthy incentive, especially for schools that are less expensive. Single moms often fall into this group, so these programs are particularly beneficial to them. Students have numerous school options: full-time or part-time, 2-year or 4-year college, multiple majors. Now the expenses are just a little lighter, and eager mothers can enroll in school.
With his actions President Obama has confirmed his belief in this issue. Through the recent stimulus package, many undergraduate and graduate loans will be less of a burden. Preparing schools and students for success is an important Obama administration mission. Since many overlook community colleges, there is emphasis on increasing their effectiveness and appeal. Community colleges are more than a stepping stone on the way to a university. They are valuable institutions.
In a 2007 speech called Reclaiming the American Dream, the President said that making college education more available is "the best investment we can make in our future." The President has shown a good effort to support his words through action. Grants for moms are just a small but vital part of the education mission. Traditional and non-traditional students alike have numerous opportunities to put their education first.
