A Gumball Machine For Your Kiddies

Thirty-five years ago when I was growing up my grandfather brought a gumball machine home

. My two brothers and I were told to see what grandfather had bought. I remember how thrilled we were when we first saw the mound of gumballs nearly whispering our names from inside the machine. To this day I still think that one or two of them may actually have spoken to me.

Grandpa gave all of us a nickel and told us to use it for the gumball machine. We were dizzy with excitement as we inserted the coin in the machine and twisted the crank. Our faces were ready to explode with excitement as we waited to see which color gumballs would be waiting behind the metal door.

Each of us smashed the gumballs into our mouth with not much regard to what those colors happened to be. Our grandad observed with a grin on his face. He then asked us to sit down because he planned to tell us about the gumball machine.

The Gumball Machine Rules

Our grandfather set up some policies for the gumball machine. He told us we weren't allowed to touch it without either him, my grandmother or one of our parents. The money we used had to be change we earned from being well-behaved and doing our chores. He also told us we weren't supposed to chew gum before a meal.

The policies were fairly simple. We understood them and nothing was going to stop us from getting gumballs.

How a Gumball Machine Made us Listen

We knew the fastest way to be informed we couldnt get gum out of the gumball machine was if we did not pay attention to Mom and Dad. Our parents knew that we all really wanted gumballs. They'd remind us whenever we didnt pay attention the first time they said something that they would tell Grandad we misbehaved. This almost always lead to a quick shift in our behavior.

Mom and Dad gave us odd jobs that would earn us some change for the gumball machine. Looking back on it, our allowance was in all probability lower than minimum wage although the statute of limitations for a lawsuit may have passed. We were more focused on the amount of gumballs we got instead of how much cash we were receiving.

The gumball machine was eventually passed down to my father and remains to be in the family. Every time I notice, it I beam.

A New Gumball Machine

I have started searching on the net for a gumball machine for my house. Its going to be both a way for me to recreate with my kids what my grandpa did for me and my brothers along with being a reminder of something wonderful from my childhood.

I see how my kids eyes light up as soon as they glimpse a gumball machine and the longing look they will give us. They practically will us to have coins in our pocket that we are going to give them so they can buy a gumball.

We favor the large gumballs in my family. The children all want the red and blue gumballs when they purchase them from a machine. I plan to stock the gumball machine with only red and blue gumballs. Maybe I will put in several white gumballs for Fourth of July, after all we want to be patriotic!

A gumball machine is a large part of my adolescence and I plan to let my children enjoy the same lessons I learned due to a pretty wise grandpa and a gumball machine.
