A surgical technician works along with the doctor and nurses in the operating room. The tech is responsible for some important aspects of surgery. They will prepare the operating room before the surgery by making sure all of the equipment is in place and sterile. They are responsible for the small tasks that often get overlooked such as replacing lights and making sure the cabinets are fully stocked in the operating room.

When you work in the field, you will also get a lot of opportunities to interact with patients. As a tech, you will be picking up the patient from a pre-op room and pushing their bed into the operating room.

After the anesthesiologist has put the patient to sleep, you will be nearby to monitor the vital signs and watch for any warning signs. You will need a knowledge of blood pressure levels, heart rhythms, and breathing regularities.

After surgery is complete, a tech will accompany the patient to a recovery room and continue monitoring vital signs. Once the patient is awake, you will help transport them to their regular hospital room and alert the nurses to any immediate needs or concerns on behalf of the patient and his or her family members.

A surgical technician has a variety of responsibilities, but the hard work is always rewarding. You can expect a salary that is nearly the same as a nurse would receive.
