A Review Of The Philips 46PFL5605
Philips has introduced the 46PFL5605 as its entry level offering, sacrificing many key features in favour of price point that many of its more expensive models possess. Since the 46PFL5605 has had many of its important features removed, one has to ask if the quality of the picture can offset its diminished capacities. Tune in below and find out.
Assembly of the 46PFL5605 requires little more than a screwdriver and a couple of minutes of time to construct the stand before the television can be attached and powered up. Philips attempts to mimic the design of its higher priced models, making the 46PFL5605 sleek and modern looking. Despite their efforts, however, the television looks cheap with its shiny black frame. Because the 46PFL5605 is equipped with LED back lighting instead of side lighting, it is thicker than Philips' more expensive models. Philips has also included a poorly designed remote control that lacks both buttons and words, making the operator have to guess about some of their functions.
When it comes to connectivity, the 46PFL5605 offers limited options since many of its features have been scaled down to match its price point. Philips has outfitted the television with VGA connections, RCA ports, component video, 2 HDMI slots, a SCART connection, and a headphone jack. One feature that the television lacks, which is found on higher end models are an Ethernet port. Thankfully, however, Philips has placed most of the ports facing downward, which makes for easy wall mounting.
The 46PFL5605 does have one thing in common with its more expensive counterparts - its poorly implemented menu and setup functions. Philips designed the system to be user friendly, but more often than not, the design proves to be clunky and inefficient. Philips has made it difficult to navigate through the menu system with its poorly designed remote control and the sheer number of steps required to change one setting is annoying.

Philips has removed two key features including a Freeview HD tuner and an Ethernet port, which could have been used to connect to the internet. The television does feature Pixel Plus HD and HD Natural Motion, two technologies that are designed to improve image quality, HD Natural motion is designed to reduce the amount of ghosting during fast movements on the screen, while Pixel Plus HD allows the television to display up to 4 trillion colours.
Surprisingly, the visual quality of the 46PFL5605 is quite good, despite its price point. In 1080p mode, colours are bright and pictures are crystal clear. Perhaps the only complaint about the picture quality is the poor black levels the television produces. This is probably due more to LCD technology's limitations than the actual performance of the TV.
The 46PFL5605 comes with a 2.1 speaker sound system by default. Performance of these speakers can only be called adequate, although there are settings on the television that can be modified to make the audio sound better.
Buyers should keep in mind that this is Philip's entry level model. The Philips 46PFL5605 may lack a lot of features, but its good picture quality will appeal to shoppers who are on a budget.
