A Review On The Reality Show, The Amazing Race
Of all the genres of TV shows, reality shows have more fans
. They are based on real incidents and are therefore more interesting for people to watch. These shows are popular discussion topics on social networking sites and are gaining more attention day by day. The viewers are so interested in them that they cant wait until the next episode to know who will win or what will happen next. One such reality show is The Amazing Race, which has won twelve primetime Emmy Awards. The show was created by Bertram van Munster and Elise Donganieri and has been aired since 2001.
The Race- Why is it amazing?
The basic theme of the show is to have the teams race around the world and the team that reaches the final destination is given the award. Eleven teams of two people each take part initially and in the final leg, there are three teams, the other teams being eliminated for various reasons in the course of the race. The team members should have some kind of pre-existing relationship with each other in order to take part in the race. This kindles the interest of people as they can observe how the team members cooperate with each other, how they adjust with their counter-parts, and so on.
The teams are required to perform certain tasks in order to get their clues to the next destination. Their tasks include Detour, Road Block, Fast Forward, Switch Back, and Route Information. The destinations are in different countries and are called Pit Stops and the teams are required to perform usually two tasks before getting the clues to the next Pit Stop. The different legs of the race are Start line task, Express Pass, Salvage Pass, and Hazard.
The interesting but shocking part:
The last team to check-in in seasons five to nine was stripped of their money and other belongings. They were not given money at the start of the next leg so they had to beg for money to meet their cab, food, and other expenses. This was the most shocking part for both the viewers and the teams.
The creators of the race have taken much care to not let the teams have a smooth race by designing obstacles such as Yield, U-Turn, and Intersection. Yield is the strategy which lets any one team to stop one of the other teams to stop racing for an hour. Detour is a similar strategy which a team can use to make the other team take a detour. Intersection is a point in the race where a team has to join with another team to perform the required tasks; however, it can choose the team it would like to partner with.
The race also has non-elimination legs in which the last team to check-in is neither eliminated nor penalized. There are double-length legs in which the teams are not eliminated and the teams have similar tasks to perform. Though it seems to be just a strategy to extend the timing of the race, it makes the teams more anxious about the results of the next leg.
The final leg is the most interesting part of the race and is run by three teams. It is usually a double-length leg has an intermediate destination near the home country. The teams would be in a happy mood because they are somewhere near their home country but on the othesr hand the burden of making it to the final destination or the check-in mat is quite high compared to the other legs. If they fail to do their best in the final leg, all their hard work will be in vain. Therefore, this is the most exciting part of the grand show. It is heartening to watch the winning team receive the award after strenuous courses of the race. You can watch such interesting shows by subscribing to Cox Cable.
