. People have benefited immensely from the enormous effects of medicines. Amidst all these, Ayurveda also shares an important space and plays a much vital role. Let's us discuss a bit, what is Ayurveda, its efficacy as medicine.

Literally speaking, Ayurveda means, the complete knowledge for long life. Ayurvedic medicine is a system of traditional medicines which has its origination and roots in India. It is basically identified and recognized as an alternative source of medicine. If history is to be believed, then it can be noted that Indian medical practices and systems were considered to be one of the richest and most effective. In the same way, Ayurveda first appeared in the books of Indian medicine during Vedic Period. With gradual passage of time, more developments took place and Ayurvedic practitioners increased significantly.

Ayurvedic medicinal system claims to cure every ailment in a quite effective manner. According to Western beliefs, Ayurveda is a system of complementary and alternative medicine that is used to complement or to help, rather than replacing the entire treatment regimen. Further it has also been identified as the bond that exists between a patient and doctor.

In the earlier days, Ayurveda mainly adopted or believed in the physics of five elements Prithvi, Agni, Jal, Vayu & Akash., which means earth, fire, water, air and sky. Ayurevedic Literature basically deals with the measures of a healthy living throughout the entire span of one's life. Hinduism and Buddhism has been an influence on the development of many of Ayurveda central ideas particularly its fascination with balance, known in Buddhism as Madhyamaka.


The Charaka Samhita mainly recommends a tenfold examination of a patient. These are mainly judged by one's constitution, abnormality, essence, stability, body measurements, diet suitability, psychic strength, digestive capacity, physical fitness and age. Apart from that, five more influential criteria for diagnosis have been identified as well. These are Origin of the disease, pronominal symptoms, Typical Symptoms of the fully developed disease, observing the effect of therapeutic procedures and the pathological process.

In fine, it can be said that, Ayurveda as an age old Indian medical procedure has been quite successful in treating patients, ever since it came into existence. The medicines are widely popular throughout the world and have successfully treated various ailments.
