A True Beginner's Guide to Surviving Shaun T's Insanity Workouts
A True Beginner's Guide to Surviving Shaun T's Insanity Workouts
I would not consider myself to be unfit. In fact, I am a full-time fitness instructor. However, once I reached a certain age I noticed a change in my body that I was not comfortable with. I gain weight more easily and my cardio endurance seems to have slipped despite my best efforts to stay fit.
Like many of you, I first saw the Insanity program on an infomercial and thought to myself, "That looks really hard". A family friend happened to be on the program and was experiencing amazing results so my husband and I decided to take the plunge.
From day one, Shaun T has you sweating in amounts you never thought possible. I drink two to three bottles of water in one forty minute workout- something I never do in my other classes. My husband is an active military serviceman in great condition and even struggles through the program.
This does not mean that a beginner can't do it! Using the Insanity program and getting the results you want requires a little honesty with yourself. Ask yourself if you are willing to commit to this sixty day challenge. Regardless of your fitness level, you CAN do this workout- but it take determination.
Each disc begins with a warm up that raises your heartrate to a level most fitness classes will peak at. The series of drills will be repeated three times in the warm up. As a beginner, I suggest starting your drills at "half-time" when compared to those in the video. If they are completing 40 jumping jacks in 1 minute, you may complete more like 20-25. Continue this approach on the second round of the same drills. This way, you have no exhausted yourself before getting to the final round in the warmup. Use the final round to push yourself as hard as you possibly can because you are looking forward to a rest and water break!
Next, you will stretch. Your body is still moving around but you aren't exerting yourself like you did in the warmup. Your breath steadies again and you stretch out all the major muscle groups you are about to work on.
The remainder of the workout is a few more series of drills- each time it is repeated three times. Use the same approach you did with the warm up. Do every round you can but do not overdo it in the first round or you won't make it to the third. Over time (in our case it was as short as 7 days), you will notice that your second and third rounds have really gained speed and stamina. Eventually, you will keep up with the cast on the video and even Shaun T.
Take breaks when you need to but try to move around. Rather than rest on the floor, take a few drinks of water and walk around the room as you rest. This will keep your heart moving while you prepare to jump back in. Also be sure to drink plenty of water and have a towel nearby to wipe the sweat off your face. You will sweat. You will sweat more than you ever have in places you never knew could sweat.
Also, try to find others doing the program. A workout buddy helps to keep you accountable and motivated. They are there to encourage you and reach your fitness goals WITH you. If you don't have one, you can use thecoaching option from Beachbody completely free! Coaches want to see you make your goals as much as you do and will help and encourage you every step of the way.
So, if you are considering buying Insanity but you just don't know if you can do it, just try it. You can always get your money back if it isn't working for you. But I guarantee that if you commit to the program, you will have no reason to want to.
