New England Systems and Solutions, LLC. (NESS), affiliate of Rockland, Massachusetts-based CPA firm Needel, Welch & Stone, P.C. (NWS) recently celebrated its 10-year anniversary.

NESS provides accounting software solutions for not-for-profit organizations and municipalities throughout New England. As a value-added reseller of AccuFund, Blackbaud's TheFinancialEdge and FundWare, NESS provides for the planning, configuration and implementation of each system, which is followed by customized training and ongoing support to end users.

"What's given us lasting power over the 10 years has been that we're CPA's that got into the accounting software business. So, not only do we know the software from a technical sense, but we understand how that software will be used from an accounting perspective and how it fits in with the day-to-day functions of CFOs, controllers and accounting staff," said Jim Clarkson, principal of NESS.

That perspective has allowed NESS to expand its offerings to include accounting services. For example, many organizations that have purchased software from the company have also retained NESS staff to function as accounting staff, controllers or CFO's. That additional service provides organizations with superior accounting services from professionals who understand the not-for-profit environment in addition to knowing the software, which saves the organization the expense of hiring permanent staff.

According to Clarkson, the value NESS brings to clients actually increases in a difficult economy.

"By their nature, nonprofits and municipalities have to get the most value for their dollar in everything they do and be accountable for that with real-time reporting capabilities," said Clarkson, a CPA who began with NWS in 1993 before the creation of NESS in 2000. "With our knowledge of both our software and how these kinds of organizations work, we can tailor solutions that optimize their software investment."

"Ten years is quite an accomplishment. Our greatest source of new business has always come from customer referrals, with the average client staying with our software platforms for more than five years. That is testimony to our staff and how we do business" added Clarkson.
