A review of the Dell Inspiron 1011
A claim made by Dell in their marketing statement for the Inspiron 1011 Mini Netbook states that the battery life for this new model is up to 9.5 hours. In practice we find this to be very misleading; depending on the use to which it is put this amount is roughly three times the actual life we have experienced with this netbook. On the other hand, the Dell 1011 Inspiron Mini Netbook, to give it its full title, features a 160GB hard drive that offers plenty of room to store all your photos and music, and Dell have packed in a good mix of features in a lightweight frame including the best Verizon Wireless EV-DO connectivity.
The compact size and light weight of the Dell mini makes it ideal for anyone on the move; it is easy to check e-mail, surf the Web, watch movies and in general keep in touch when travelling. If you run into difficulties when using this Netbook you may be glad of the integral support centre application that makes getting help a breeze.
Although the monitor is only 10.1 inches wide it is large enough for most things, and the keyboard and trackpad are perfectly useable in an everyday situation. Some rival netbooks like the Sony W11XX have smaller keyboards which can generate problems for typists over time, but nobody using this model complained of difficulty in using either the keyboard or trackpad, and the Dell also includes a built-in webcam, a card reader and 3 USB ports. The Inspiron Mini 10 offers several different hard drive options and up to 2GB of memory and as netbooks are less expensive than full-size laptops, it can be the perfect budget netbook for people with school-age children. A brand new model running Windows 7 was available at the time of writing for under 200.
Equipment operating on Windows XP can still be found on the internet, but the ones we have noticed were not fitted with a card reader. Our test netbook ran Windows 7 starter edition that was okay for most things but did slow down to a crawl if more than three applications were running at once.
Many new netbooks offer better performance than the Dell 1011, but where it really scores is in the price; there are not a lot of rivals that can compete in this area.
In its target market the Dell Inspiron 1011 mini is an ideal choice for anybody that wants to stay in touch while on the move. Its light weight makes it wonderful to travel with, but the battery life is a disappointment when compared to some newer rivals. For most people considering buying this Machine the cost will be the big concern, but for some buying into an established make like Dell will be the decisive factor. Verdict 3/5
