A visitor's guide to Lyndhurst, New Forest, Hampshire

, UK

Lyndhurst came to prominence as a destination around the time that William the Conqueror declared the New forest to be his hunting ground in 1079. It quickly became known as the capital' of the forest and was the chosen destination for royalty and other gentry when visiting the country.

The name Lyndhurst is likely to be of Saxon origin and means lime-wood'. The town was so-named due to the abundance of this vegetation in the area. In fact, several examples of Britain's small-leaved lime tree can still be found around the village, although the majority of these enclaves have long since been destroyed.

There is evidence that Lyndhurst was a settlement in the Bronze Age (a number of tumuli burial sites can be found nearby) and in some sites Roman coins have been excavated. However, it was first notarised as a royal manor, granted to the Abbey of Amesbury (Wiltshire), in AD980. Just one hundred years later, William the Conqueror designated the whole area between the River Avon and the River Test (below Wiltshire) to be his personal hunting ground.

Lyndhurst's importance grew as it connected many developing towns and cities, including Southampton, Lymington, Ringwood, Fordingbridge, Beaulieu, Romsey and Winchester. The beautiful surroundings became a magnet for artists and writers, eager to share the haunt of royalty and nobility.

Today, Lyndhurst is a popular destination for tourists throughout the year and one of its key attractions is the New Forest Museum where visitors can learn all about the history of the forest. It is an ideal base from which to explore the New Forest. There are many things to see and do, whether you are interested in horse riding, cycling or simply walking the trails Lyndhurst is an excellent starting point.

Located on the A35 in the centre of the forest, Lyndhurst does not have a train station, but is easily reached by bus from Ashurst or Brockenhurst (both of which are on the main London Waterloo to Poole line). A one-way system operates around the town.

Accommodation in Lyndhurst hotels is abundant and all tastes and budgets are catered for. The Lyndhurst Park Hotel has perhaps the best location on the corner of the forest and is only a minute's stroll to the high street. For more luxurious accommodation try the Limewood Hotel with accompanying spa.

Lyndhurst is a beautiful village and the perfect place to relax and unwind. There are many guest houses providing bed and breakfast accommodation in Lyndhurst (Lyndhurst B&B). Lyndhurst cottages can be rented for the week and sometimes just for a weekend. For those that prefer to be under canvas, campsites in Lyndhurst can be found at: Acres Down, Denny Wood, Green Pastures, Hill Farm and Ocknell and Longbeach all of which offer further self catering accommodation.
