If you were going to study ballet dancing and were starting at ballet school

, here is what you would do. When you got to school you would see a large room with a smooth wooden floor, and a piano in one corner, or perhaps a phonograph. Along the wall on one side there would be a rail like the one we mentioned before. This is the barre. Before you started to dance you would change into your practice clothes. Girls studying ballet usually wear a special type of costume called a leotard, "a onepiece garment that fits snugly from the shoulders to the thighs, but you do not absolutely have to have it. You can use any clothes that are easy to stretch and bend in. Then you would put on your ballet slippers. If you were an advanced pupil who had studied for a long time, you might put on a pair of slippers called pointes, with hard toes for dancing on the tips of your toes, but if you were not an advanced pupil you would only be learning to dance on "half-toe," like standing on tiptoe, and this is called demi-pointe. When the class starts you will probably practice at the barre for about a half hour, doing the five positions and exercises to stretch and strengthen your legs. Here are a few of the principal exercises that are always used in ballet school. Some of them are to learn technique, which means the kind of movement you will use in actual dancing, so that very hard steps are made easy. The names are in French, but mean just what you are doing. For example, bras in French means "arm," and porter means "to carry," so the movement we call port tie bras in ballet just means "carry the arms," and when we hear that term we know it means to move the arms around gracefully in different positions.
