Academic Studies in the Business Professional

The key concepts that have made me a stronger candidate to enter the business world are time management, critical thinking and Goals and Planning.

Time Management-

This refers to the abilities to be in control of your time and hence your life. Time is a very important factor for the success of any business. In my business studies, I have learnt the importance of time management. One of the ways is that I should do the most important things first and if possible in the mornings. This works well when you have already planned a day before your schedule of tasks for the following day. Time management also involves knowing the best time that you are more productive (Mind tools). Having the concept of managing time is important because you can organize a to-do list everyday. Knowing what to do is what helps you know how to manage time. I have also learnt that to be a good time manager, there are some things that I will respond to things more slowly than a bad time manager e.g. answering a phone call when I am doing a highest priority task. Time management will help me achieve my goals, monitor my progress and prevent time wastage. It has also helped me know how to prioritize and finish what I have started. This has made me make progress in my academic and professional life, control and manage stress and I am now able to maintain a balance and flexibility between my personal, professional and academic life. It has made me get organized, avoid procrastination and kick out laziness.

Critical thinking

Logical and critical thinking has helped me to be able to analyze situations competently. In return I will be able to see things from my customer's point of view and not just from my point of view. I will be able to make concise judgments based on the facts available. Therefore I will be able to decide if any action should be taken. And if so which action I should take. From my business studies I have learnt that critical analysis should be free from personal desires and wants but based on the available facts and figures. E.g. If a customer purchases a product from me and then claims it to be of poor quality, a typical reaction would be to change the product. But since I have learnt critical thinking in my business, I would first assess the reaction and comments of other customers. If the essentials facts I obtain from them proves that the product is low quality, then the solution will be to change the product. But if not, I will know that that particular customer was in a bad mood or his preferences differ.

Goals and Planning

In my business studies, I have learnt that if you do not know where you are going, any road will take you there. I have known the difference between strategic planning, business plans and operational plans. A strategic plan is usually visionary, conceptual, directional and shorter while a business plan is detailed and more comprehensive. An operational plan has a focus, should be implementable, with a measure, tactical and short term (time management guide). Goals on the other hand are specific measurements, interim or ultimate time based that ought to be achieved after implementation of the plans and the strategies .the goals usually involves where you want to see the business in the next few years. Setting the goals involves knowing where you are and what you want to achieve. It requires deciding on your long term and short term goals. From this I have learnt that setting goals can help me get motivated and aim higher. With goals well planned, I am able to determine my progress and know how far away or how near I am from my targets. I am also able to know when I am negating away from the targets.
