So how exactly does keeping a diary achieve personal development? The answer is pretty simple: keeping a diary lets you know more about yourself. It enhances your self-knowledge and your self-awareness. Try to keep a diary for a week, and then take some time off to read it. You will notice that the things you write about the most are the things that really matter to you. You will also see the things that could make you happy, as well as those that could make you sad. You'll also be more aware of the things that take up most of your time, and from this, evaluate whether or not you really spend time doing things that make you happy.
