Achieving success in an MLM (multi-level or network marketing) business is difficult for most people. With a failure rate of upwards of 97% in this type of home based business, success is not easy to come by in MLM. Millions of dollars are earned by some of the leaders in MLM, but they are the top people who have persevered and made it in the business along with the few natural salespeople who may find almost instant success.

Network marketing is an industry in which people can have their own home based business for a miniscule financial investment as compared to a brick and mortar business which requires a building, inventory, employees, etc. A person can become a distributor, consultant, or representative for an MLM company very easily. There are almost no requirements except to pay the initial fee to sign up to buy their products. It usually takes a reoccurring monthly order on autoship, which means that they will charge your credit card and send you product every month, to be active in the pay plan. You will not earn any money unless you buy some product yourself each month as specified in the compensation plan. Generally, people are spending money on autoship orders for months before they will see any pay out from their work. Thousands of people from baby boomers, students, housewives, businessmen, and senior citizens join MLM companies each week, and thousands more quit the business.

Most people who are successful in network marketing often say how they failed miserably at it for a period of time before they found success. Except for the very few top earners who had exceptional success from the beginning because they had a great deal of credibility in other fields and a wide influence, people most often find that achieving success in MLM is extremely difficult. Indeed, most will fail and give up before they see a dime in profit from the business. They will usually lose more money than they will ever earn.

There are a number of internet gurus who are touting MLM through the online sources which they have developed to get people in their downline (the line of people who sign up below them in the business). They talk about how they tried the traditional methods of MLM without success before discovering the secret formula which they will impart to you for a fee. They are often selling monthly services themselves, and they say that people want to join them in their MLM businesses after they become friends by building a relationship with them.

No matter how you work an MLM program, whether it is through the internet or the traditional methods by which some people are still finding success, it is not an easy business. Finding good mentors can help, but MLM is a difficult business for most. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to find success in the business, but it is possible.
