Addiction Treatment Experts Alarmed at New Designer Drugs

Addiction treatment counselors are becoming increasingly alarmed at new designer drugs being sold over counter. The problems associated with these new drugs are the immediate effects often causing seizures and hallucinations culminated with severe bouts of paranoia. These new designer drugs are making many abusers sick. Law enforcement officials cannot keep pace with those that seek to prey on others for profit. These new designer drugs are taking the country by storm and as officials adjust so do the manufacturers. As hospital admissions and toxicology reports to poison controls skyrocket, addiction treatment counselors prepare for the onslaught.

Drug addiction treatment experts say most of these synthetic drugs are sold as bath salts and incense can be purchased for as little as $10 in convenience stores and head shops throughout the country. The desire to make a quick buck while preying on the vulnerable results in increased health costs, taxes and insurance for law abiding citizens.

Kids seeking to fit or with some sort of insecurity continue to look for ways to alter their state of consciousness, thinking they have found the answer only to cause often irreparable damage. The toxins in these synthetic designer drugs can cause physical problems that can range from labored breathing (onset of respiratory failure) and delusions that can last for days.

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is working tirelessly to curb or prevent the sale of these dangerous products outlawing five chemicals found in synthetic marijuana and putting them in the same category as heroin and cocaine. Chinese manufacturers adjust quickly producing new formulas just a single molecule away from the illegal products that are killing people. People still consume these even when labeled "Not for human consumption".

Treatment for the hallucinogenic, psychotic effects for most physicians includes a cocktail of anti-anxiety meds to ease blood pressure and depress the nervous system. Although on an immediate basis this may solve the current danger, long term treatment using these kinds of drugs can lead to dependency. Tremendous amounts of nutrients are burnt up during the absorption of toxic substances; lack of these nutrients contributes greatly to depression, anxiety and paranoia.

Helping to ease the psychotic aftershock of these designer drugs on a long-term basis would best be suited to include a nutritional program to restore these deficiencies and avoid possible addiction to prescription drugs.

When young people have an inherent insecurity, and we all do at sometime in our lives, the risk of seeking these kinds of solutions by trying to fit in or altar their state of mind and have no idea what lies in store. There are lots of people getting sick and dying as a result of ignorance and apathy. Abusers of these drugs tell others nothing happened, when nothing could be further from the truth. Where one leads others will follow. Teaching teenagers to be responsible young adults and keep their own counsel when it comes to altering their reality is a big part of preventing the need for an addiction treatment program.
