Advanced Ninja Training - In A Self Defense Situation, Control His Perceptions To Control The Fight!
When most people think about the idea of learning self defense
, what usually comes to mind are the cool moves and tricky techniques that the martial arts are known for. But, the reality is that no attacker is going to let you do your self defense technique to him.
This article discusses an important aspect in mastering self defense -- the idea of controlling your assailant's perceptions. This, like many of the skills needed to successfully survive a real world attack coming from an attacker bent on beating, breaking or killing you, is not a conventional self defense technique per se...
But has everything to do with self defense, and your ability to win!
The truth is that, if you want to control your attacker, you must understand that you are not in a sport or evenly matched competition. You are in the situation you find yourself because the attacker believes that he has the advantage.
That means that you will probably not have the advantage when it comes to things like
* Strength
* Speed
* Size, or...
* The availability of weapons.
So, you must be able to effect your opponent without relying on these things. Again, in this article, the focus is on controlling his perceptions. But, to be truly effective, you will need to master other invisible, but equally powerful concepts like:
* Balance breaking (yours and his)
* Timing
* Flow, and
* Strategic thinking (to name just a few)
Effecting and Controlling Your Attacker's Perception
Controlling your assailant's perceptions does many things. Most notably, it determines what he will do to you. That's because we human beings base our actions on the information we have available to us, and then go from there.
And your attacker won't be any different.
There are many ways to approach this topic. But for the sake of this article, here are three different perspectives on the subject. We can effect:
1.What he sees - We do this by moving and positioning ourselves in certain ways. By taking control of what the opponent sees, we control what he believes that we will do in response to his attack. If we take up an aggressive fighting stance, he is likely to turn up the energy and intention that he will put into coming at you. However, if we bring up our arms to shield our head or face and position our body in a cowering position, he is more apt to lower the amount of energy as he perceives an easy victory.
2.What he thinks - Related to number 1, what we do and how we move also effects and conditions what he thinks he can do as an attack and/or follow up. By understanding subtleties like body language, as well as having some knowledge of different fighting and attacking styles, we can come to understand a person's personality type and how they are likely to attack in the first place. By controlling what he thinks, we can allow him to do what he does, or we can cause confusion in his mind to the point where he is outside of his comfort zone and unable to use the techniques and strategies that he has become comfortable with.
3.What he experiences - This relies on our ability to think strategically and to get a feel for the fight. As a by-product, controlling what an attacker experiences, directly relates to what he thinks but from within the fight. Where we generally effect what he sees and what he thinks before he launches his attack, here we are controlling his perceptions during the attack. This ties in directly with those other areas of skill that I mentioned earlier (timing, balance, etc.) and how they are used to control his movements (or inability to do so) from within the foray.
Contrary to popular belief, self defense is much deeper than many would have you believe. And, while there may be a few techniques that will allow you to crush the attacker in 2 seconds or less! - the truth is that you must be able to position yourself, open his targets, and control his perceptions so that you can actually do the promised move in the first place!
