Air Conditioning Can Save Energy And Money

Saving energy in the home is a great way to help protect the environment and save some money

. And one easy way people can save energy is through their air conditioning units. There are many different brands and models of energy-efficient air conditioning systems that are designed to cool homes quickly, with minimal resources. Although some of these systems may be more expensive to purchase, they will save homeowners money in the long run by cooling more efficiently and using less energy resources. And after purchasing and installing an energy-efficient cooling system, there are several other things people can do to save money and resources with their air conditioning.

First of all, people should be sure to properly maintain their cooling system, including hiring repair services if needed. For instance, filters should be cleaned or replaced about once a month because dusty filters will reduce the air flow and require more energy to cool down a living area. Other possible damages to an AC unit include holes in the seal by the window frame that may allow cool air to escape. Coils can also become clogged with dust and inhibit air flow.

In order to keep the cool air indoors, homeowners should also weather-strip all doors and windows and close any unnecessary openings. Setting the thermostat to 78 degrees Fahrenheit is another great energy-saving tip. If homeowners set the thermostat much lower than 78 degrees, they could potentially increase their cooling costs up to 47 percent. And people should also remember that turning the thermostat even lower will not help the home reach 78 degrees any faster; rather, it will simple waste energy.

People should also not position heat-producing appliances immediately next to the thermostat. When appliances such as televisions and lamps are near the thermostat, the air conditioning will kick in earlier and stay on longer than it should. Also, heat-producing appliances such as ovens, stoves, washers, and dryers should ideally be used in the mornings or evenings when the day is cooler so as not to overheat the house.

Cooling and heating systems account for up to half of the average home's energy costs. But by taking a few small steps, people can go a long way to saving energy and money with their air conditioning systems. By purchasing energy-efficient units, keeping them well maintained, and ensuring that the cool air stays indoors, homeowners can save money and help protect the earth's natural resources.
