Airline Lifejackets Seem Kind Of Unnecessary

Why do airlines continue to worry passengers that there is the possibility of a sea

landing and show them how to put on their lifejacket when such an accident happens so rarely and that when an accident of such scale does happen it's very unlikely that a water landing will cause any passengers to survive. The recent landing of a plane on the Hudson after it was downed by a flock of geese may however have made the case for lifejackets once again.

I'm really well versed in how to put an aircraft lifejacket on. After all, I've sat through the demonstration dozens of times. I know how to put the thing on. I know that there is a light and whistle that can be used to draw attention to yourself when you are in the water. And I know that there is a tube that you can use to add extra air into the inflated life jacket. But I'm really unsure whether lifejackets are in fact all that necessary, especially on flights from Atlanta to Nashville that won't even go over a sea or ocean. Maybe a swimming pool, but nothing that a plane could fit in.

If the worse were to happen and a plane were to crash in the sea that I can't see how anyone would be able to survive. Sure, they are occasions where planes are able to successfully make a water landing, but in the situation on the Hudson when the plane crashed I don't think that anyone actually needed the lifejackets, people either jumped into lifeboats or stood on the wings.

I think lifejackets are unnecessary, but then they don't take up much space so perhaps it's best to keep them for flights from San Jose to Londonbut for flights from Los Angeles to San Francisco I think a bottle of water would be more practical.
