All About School Playground Equipment
There are many styles of school playground equipment
, from that which is suitable for the very young in kindergarten and the early years, to the mid primary and later primary years. Playground equipment for children in school years of kindergarten and possibly years one and two, will need equipment which is designed with more safety features than for the older classes. Children of this age are not quite as good at looking ahead to danger as the child which is much older.
They can often get excited when playing, and a rush during these episodes of excitement could cause injury to themselves or another with a push at the wrong time. With this in mind playing equipment should be of a design where there is nothing sharp protruding which a child could be injured on, or the equipment is not too high that an injury could occur if a child falls off.
The playground equipment needs to be interesting. Colours are often a good idea but not absolutely necessary, and they need to have a bit of a challenge to them. This can be in the way of climbing frames, ladders which have to be climbed to get to the top of a platform, then being able to slide all the way to the bottom on a slippery slide. Another thing is usually rings to put their hands in to pull themselves up, plus bars with the same object, and bridges to cross as well.
There are quite a number of ideas which can be incorporated into playground equipment to give enjoyment and fun while the child is learning better coordination, balance, motivation and other skills.
The mid primary years often sees the playground equipment of a more advanced nature to include fitness type objects for the children to play on, these also need to be of a safe nature to help prevent any serious injury.
These can range from all sorts of climbing frames to hand over hand bars, or where the child has to pull themselves up on a bar with their hands then without touching the ground keep moving hand over hand along the bar to the end. This is very good for strength building and fitness.
There are also fitness tracks which are suitable for all the older primary years. These range from beams for the children to walk along, bars for use with their hands and arms, and monkey bars or those which have been designed like a ladder suspended horizontally from two poles on either end which challenges the child to go hand over hand till they reach the end of the so called ladder. An excellent piece of equipment for improving fitness while having fun as well as being a challenge as the child has to swing to help negotiate this design. There is often only one drawback, with blisters sometimes occurring on the hands.
With a school situation there is often a teacher on duty to watch the children if they are allowed to play on this type of equipment during their lunch hour, or the teacher is present if it is a class activity. There is however still a need for the equipment to be of a safe design due to the number of children which may use it.
