Allman Brothers own New York
Not many people know this, but the Allman Brothers own the Beacon Theater in New York. At least it seems that way. In March of 2011 alone, they are playing thirteen concerts in a rowat that venue. They have played over 190 shows at the Beacon, more than any other band.
The band has been through several reincarnations, but the southern rock keeps getting grittier. Greg Allman's "Low Country Blues" was recently released, and debuted at the highest Billboard chart position of his career. Roadies have died, a keyboardist has been added, and the band that refused to be defeated rolls into the Beacon Theater with a head of steam that would make upstart bands envious.
Outside the Beacon Theater, the scalpers set up shop on street corners, and New Yorker's claim bragging rights if they already have tickets. The show will be broadcast on Moogis. Greg has even been featured on National Public Radio. March has become an annual homecoming for the band in New York City.
In other words, New York City is being invaded, and welcoming the invasion. The best way to tell if spring is coming in New York is to see that the Allman Brothers are taking the Beacon once again.
No setlist is available, as the band keeps its plans secret. But the web is buzzing with the possibilities and requests for favorites. Videos of previous gigs show extended jams that turn into familiar songs. It's as if the Allman Brothers Band stretches out and relaxes at the Beacon.
It is a sign of the times that "aging" rockers keep triumphing on tour, with tickets being sold to kids as much as oldies fans. The vitality of bands like the Allman Brothers is testament to the fact that audiences go for unique, from-the-gut music no matter who makes it.
New York might as well rename the Empire State Building as Allman Towers. Or better yet, name Central Park, which is just off the path to the Beacon Theater, as Greg Allman's Back Yard.
